At eight o’clock in the morning Captain John Coffin and a detachment of the South Carolina loyalist calvary were observing ahead of Captain Stewart’s main force when they saw an mounted American scouting party under Major John Armstrong. Coffin followed Armstrong, which lead into an attack. Attacked by Henry Lee’s 2nd Partisan Corps,Coffin escaped but left 4 of his men killed and 40 captured. Commander Grene’s force of 2,200 men tried to approach Major Stewart’s camp while Stewart, warned by Coffin, deployed his force. When the Americans realized they were approaching they formed two lines, with the militia in the front and North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia regulars in the back. The British charged, breaking the Americans position. The North Carolina Continental reinforced the first, and were almost successful until they were to broken by a British charge.
